Enjoy Thai Food and adhere to your Diet Restrictions

Thai food is hard to resist but what about people who have food allergies. This article is for people who have diet restrictions yet still want to enjoy Thai food.
The thing that you have to always keep in mind is to try to eat natural products as much as possible for instance instead of ordering a dessert, go for fresh fruits. If you have any doubts about the ingredients being used don’t take a risk, simply ask the staff for advice.

You must check the ingredients properly if you are buying tinned or processed food. If it is a restaurant, then you must check with the staff.

Tips for vegetarians

Just because you have ordered something vegetarian does not mean that it will completely vegetarian. Non-vegetarian content is actually everywhere in Thai food unless you specify otherwise.

Non vegetarian products have been a part of Thai cooking for millennium. Most of the salads and vegetables dishes contain shrimp sauce or fish sauce and it may also be in the form of oyster sauce. So even if you are ordering stir-fried vegetables, the dish may still sometimes contain non vegetarian traces.

While some vegetarians don’t bother much and can accept a bit of meat or egg content some people might not like it. You should mention clearly your requirements when placing the order.

Seafood nightmares

Some people are allergic to seafood. If you are amongst them then take care since shrimp paste or dried shrimps are a common ingredient in Thai dishes. In Thai food, it is not always obvious to the eye. So always make sure that you specify while ordering your food. Some people avoid pork. Sometimes beef and pork may get contaminated. So be careful to go to a reputed restaurant since they would follow strict ethics while cooking.

Lactose intolerance

Although Thai cuisine is not dairy based some of the dishes might contain dairy products. Certain foods contain coconut milk but some restaurants might be using cow’s milk instead. Again remember to go to a reputed restaurant for Thai food in London since they will cater for specialist diets.

Gluten allergy

Wheat has penetrated Thai food secretly. Most of the traditional dishes are rice based but again many pastries and puddings contain wheat flour. Certain dishes were authentically made with rice flour but now most of them make it with wheat flour. Sometimes wheat may also be used for thickening.

So be careful while ordering Thai dishes and always eat at a reputable restaurant.

At Thai Square restaurants, we indicate allergen keys on the menus. If you have further concerns about allergies, please ask our member of staff. They have been trained and are willing to help you.
